Top Esports Overcome a Disrupted Build-Up to Reach the Worlds 2026 Quarterfinals
Top Esports have secured a place in the quarterfinals of League of Legends Worlds 2026, finishing the Swiss stage with a 3-1 record. Entering the tournament as the LPL's third seed, the team lost its opening match to Hanwha Life Esports (HLE) and then won three series in a row — against Anyone's Legend (AL), G2 Esports and Bilibili Gaming (BLG). The result sends the team into the last eight for the second consecutive year; at the previous edition, Top Esports reached the semifinals.
In the Swiss format, teams that win three matches advance directly to the knockout stage. For Top Esports the path was complicated from the very first match, when HLE beat them. After that loss the team had no room for error — three wins in a row were required, and the team delivered all three. However, the scores of those three series and their format (best-of-one, best-of-three or best-of-five) are not clearly recorded in publicly available reports, an unusual gap for a match report.
That opening match against HLE was especially difficult for top laner 369, who was up against a world-class top laner in Zeus. Having returned after months away from competitive LoL, 369 visibly lacked match feel. The loss also highlighted the disruption to the team's preparation that had received little attention beforehand.
Before the tournament, Top Esports had to deal with visa-related problems that kept two coaches away from the team. Top laner ZUIAN was also unavailable. Reports connect the visa issue with these absences, but the causal link is not publicly confirmed. It is also unclear who took charge in the coaches' absence and who led draft preparation. Without these details, the narrative of "success despite obstacles" remains incomplete.
To fill ZUIAN's spot, the team called 369 back from semi-retirement. The move was less a planned strategy than a decision forced by circumstance, and the risk was obvious — a late arrival had not had enough scrim time with the team. Both the management and the player later acknowledged that it took time to find rhythm.
During his break, 369 spent most of his time playing VALORANT, according to the player himself. He said that the distance from LoL and the mental engagement with a different game left him feeling refreshed and helped him view competitive pressure from a different angle. It is worth noting that this claim is entirely his own; it has not been corroborated by a coach, an analyst or any independent source. It is natural for a player to frame his own break positively, and reporting should treat the claim with that caution.
Top Esports' run has come against the backdrop of disappointment in recent months. At MSI 2026 the team was eliminated after a 1-3 loss to Team Secret Whales. On the international stage, the team's results have often not matched its domestic dominance, which is why expectations around it at every Worlds tend to be cautious. But treating a single tournament loss as evidence of a long-term trend is not sound — the MSI 2026 result came in a different format, on a different patch and under different circumstances.
One more fact matters when assessing this run: Top Esports reached the semifinals at Worlds last year and arrived this time as the LPL's third seed. Reaching the quarterfinals is therefore a solid but not surprising result relative to its seeding. Given the team's ceiling, this falls into the category of expected performance, even if the preparation conditions were abnormal.
The team's record against BLG has often been a topic of discussion. According to publicly available figures, BLG won three of the last four meetings, all by 3-0. Caution is needed when interpreting those results: a 3-0 scoreline usually indicates a best-of-five series, which is possible only in domestic LPL playoffs or finals. Worlds Swiss-stage matches are played in shorter formats. The statistic therefore comes from a different format, a different patch and possibly a different roster; it cannot be used directly as the yardstick for this win. Establishing that would require the dates and the competitions of those matches.
Even so, a win over a team like BLG in the knockout race carries its own weight. BLG is counted among the LPL's top teams, and beating them brings confidence as well as a better position in the bracket. More importantly, despite limited preparation the team showed an ability to adapt within a series.
The team's turnaround has so far been explained mainly through psychological factors — 369's experience, the mentality of Tian and JackeyLove, and the stability maintained despite the changes. But very little of the discussion concerns the technical side of the game. What changed in the drafts after the loss to HLE, how the team read the meta, what improved in objective control and vision, and how the matchups against the next three opponents were handled — public data on these questions is limited. This is a gap that will require comment from the coaching staff or analysts to fill.
It is being said of Tian and JackeyLove that they showed a completely different side at this tournament. The claim comes without a single metric — no KDA, no damage share, no gold differential, no comparison with a previous tournament. Such an assessment should be taken seriously only when there is a comparative basis behind it; otherwise it remains merely the language of impression.
Accuracy is also needed regarding 369's Worlds experience. From 2026 onwards his team has reached the knockout stage at five consecutive Worlds, but that is a team-level record, and his teams changed over those five years. The statistic says more about the strength of the rosters he was part of than about his individual performance. Similarly, saying on the basis of three matches that he has "hardly lost" his world-class quality is to draw a large conclusion from a small sample.
Reports have said nothing about BLG's side. It is unclear whether this loss eliminated BLG from the tournament or sent them into a decider match. Without mentioning the opponent's situation, the "rivalry" framing remains one-sided, because it does not show how much was at stake for whom.
Who Top Esports face in the quarterfinals will be settled once the bracket is complete. Compared with the Swiss stage, the knockout rounds bring a best-of-five format, greater pressure and more preparation time for opponents. The team will need to maintain its form and cut down on mistakes — that advice is correct, but it is not a prediction and yields no forecast about the outcome.
It is useful to list the facts that remain within the scope of verification: the score and format of the TES–BLG series; the order and scores of the four Swiss-stage opponents; the dates and competitions of BLG's three 3-0 wins; the year-by-year and team-by-team breakdown of 369's five-Worlds knockout record; the actual reason for the absence of the coaches and ZUIAN; and the correct name and stage of Team Secret Whales at MSI 2026. Without these, statistics-based claims should be read with caution.
Overall, Top Esports' arrival in the quarterfinals is a solid result — especially against a backdrop of disrupted preparation, two absent coaches and a late lineup change. But there is not yet enough evidence to call it "one of the most unbelievable journeys." The real story is that, amid disrupted preparation, the team made the adjustments needed to stay in the tournament and won three series in a row after an opening loss. The most interesting part of that story — how the team fixed what broke against HLE — has yet to be written.
