Pune: Marina Kings won the fourth season of the Coastal Premier T20 League (CPTL), defeating Highland Riders by five runs in the final at Central Oval on Sunday night. Batting first, Marina Kings posted 187 for six in their twenty overs. In reply, Highland Riders managed only 182 for eight. The match went to the last over, where the chasing side needed 15 runs but could collect just nine. Central Oval was packed, with 32,400 spectators officially recorded, the highest attendance of the season. The 7 pm start meant dew was always going to be a factor, and both captains acknowledged it at the toss. Highland Riders captain Ishaan Verma won the toss and chose to field, explaining later that "bowling second with the dew settling is a losing proposition." Marina Kings' start was far from smooth. Vihaan Kulkarni was trapped lbw by Sameer Khan in the third over without scoring, and Ryan Mistry was caught at cover in the next over, leaving the side at 28 for two inside four overs. Kabir Sheikh conceded just nine runs in his first two overs. Aarav Deshmukh and Nikhil Patil steadied the innings with a 96-run third-wicket stand, the largest partnership of the final. Deshmukh made 68 off 41 balls with five fours and four sixes, using his feet against spin and working the ball through midwicket. Patil's 44 off 33 balls was slower but equally valuable. Marina Kings added 61 in the last five overs. After Patil fell in the 17th, captain Rudra Bhardwaj struck 26 off 14 to push the total past 180. Sheikh finished with three for 28, while Arjun Nair's death overs proved expensive. Highland Riders began aggressively. Verma hit two boundaries in the first over, and the side reached 58 for one in the powerplay. Tejas Joshi made 31 off 22 before falling to a loose shot in the seventh over. Marina Kings' spinners then tightened the game. Left-armer Devansh Rao conceded only 22 in four overs and took two wickets, striking in the 12th and 14th overs. Verma's 72 off 46 kept the chase alive until the 16th over. The turning point came in the 17th, when Verma was caught at deep midwicket with 46 still needed off 33 balls. Only 17 runs came from the 18th and 19th overs. In the final over, skipper Bhardwaj handed the ball to Sheikh. A single, a boundary, a single, a run-out and two runs left seven required off the last ball. Sheikh bowled a yorker and conceded only a single. The Marina Kings bench ran onto the field. Deshmukh was named Player of the Match. "When we lost two wickets inside four overs, my only thought was to bat deep," he said. "The pitch was slow and the dew made gripping the ball harder for the spinners, so I played straight and used the crease." Verma admitted the margin stung. "Five runs is a lot in a final. We were five short in the middle overs and that was the difference," he said. Marina Kings head coach Rohan Iyer said the team had planned specifically for the death overs. "We knew dew makes yorkers difficult, so we prepared for that phase in three separate meetings," he said. Marina Kings scored 98 in the last ten overs against Highland Riders' 84. Eleven wickets fell in the match, most of them to sustained pressure rather than individual error. Pitch and weather shaped the contest. Central Oval slowed in the second innings and the dew reduced swing. Two bowlers slipped during the chase, forcing ground staff onto the field. The league played 42 matches this season, broadcast in 14 countries. "The last over of this final is exactly why T20 cricket is unpredictable," said league chairman Devansh Rao, adding that two new teams are under review for next season. The season also emphasised local talent, with each side required to field at least four domestic players per match. Marina Kings used that rule best, and five of their players entered the national selection pool for the first time. The winners received the trophy and 12 million rupees; the runners-up took 7 million. All eight captains attended the ceremony. The league will announce next season's schedule next month. Marina Kings will now play the inter-league championship against the winner of another regional league. Iyer said the core group will be retained, with changes likely only in the pace department. It is Marina Kings' second title in four seasons. Their 187 is the highest total in a final, and the five-run margin is the narrowest in tournament history. The crowd stayed long after the last ball. As the floodlights dimmed, the players were still on the field and the stands were still loud. Lifting the trophy, the Marina Kings captain said only this: "We won this on trust between players, not on one man's performance."
