Harsh Dubey's nine-for and Salil Arora's fourth ton in six innings light up Ranji Trophy round four
The opening day of round four of the Ranji Trophy 2026/27 belonged to the bowlers, and two individual efforts dominated the narrative. Vidarbha's spinner Harsh Dubey produced the day's most startling figure, taking nine wickets for 53 against Madhya Pradesh, while Punjab's Salil Arora struck his fourth century of the season in only six innings. Nineteen matches were played across the country on day one — four each in Elite Groups A, B, C and D and three in the Plate Group — meaning all 38 teams were in action. The pattern was unmistakable: batting was hard work. Rajasthan were bowled out for 78, Bengal for 143, Assam for 135, and Jharkhand crawled to 37 for 3 in 25 overs. Against that backdrop, Karnataka reached 180 for 2 for a lead of 45, and Punjab recovered from 71 for 5 to 276 for 5.
Group A: Dubey's nine-for puts Vidarbha under pressure
In the Vidarbha-Madhya Pradesh match, Dubey took 9 for 53 and MP were bowled out for 209. The figure is as unusual as it is spectacular. Nine wickets mean every other bowler combined conceded 156 runs for a single wicket — Dubey kept striking at one end while Atharva Mahajan fought through 85 at the other. Mahajan's innings was what carried MP past 200; without him the total would have been smaller still. In reply, Vidarbha closed the day on 56 for 4, still 153 runs behind. Fourteen wickets have already fallen on day one, so a result looks achievable and the first session of day two will shape the match. Dubey's effort is being described as historic for Vidarbha, but Ranji Trophy history includes ten-wicket innings hauls, so it is better framed as a Vidarbha record than as a first in the competition.
In the Karnataka-Assam match, Assam were bowled out for 135. Bhatkal took 5 for 35 and Shetty 5 for 53 — the two shared all ten wickets, leaving a single wicket for the rest of the attack. Karnataka reached 180 for 2 in reply, a lead of 45. The advantage looks small, but on this surface the value of the first innings is enormous: if Karnataka get to around 300, Assam's road back becomes very steep. The other two Group A matches also tilted towards the bowlers, with scoring rates kept low.
Group B: Punjab's rescue act, Bengal bundled out
Punjab produced the most composed batting of the day. At 71 for 5 they were in trouble, but Salil Arora and Sanvir not only steadied the innings but turned it around. Both reached centuries — Arora is unbeaten on 111 and Sanvir on 100 — and their unbroken sixth-wicket stand is already worth 205 runs. Punjab closed on 276 for 5. It is Arora's fourth century of the campaign, achieved in six innings, which means roughly every third innings is converting into a hundred. The number is excellent, but it should not be sold as 'four hundreds in four matches': the four tons have come in six innings, a small difference that changes the fact. Arora, who is attached to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, is strengthening his case in domestic cricket — though the franchise tag is not his domestic side, which is Punjab.
Bengal were dismissed for 143, and by stumps Maharashtra had lost two wickets for 21 — twelve wickets in the day. Maharashtra trail by 122, but with such a modest first-innings target, one partnership could flip the match. Bengal's bowlers need early breakthroughs on day two, otherwise the game could drift away from them.
Group C: Paliwal's lone hand, Jharkhand's crawl
Services were bowled out for 266, but the story of that total is Rajat Paliwal's unbeaten 111. The scorecard shows he was stranded at the end — partners kept falling at the other end while he carried the innings alone. A total of 266 is no collapse and calling it one would be inaccurate; it is a slightly below-par score on this surface, made respectable by Paliwal.
In the group's other match, Jharkhand reached 37 for 3 in 25 overs. A run rate of around 1.5 an over suggests either a surface on which batting is extremely difficult or repeated interruptions in play. Either way it is a worrying start, and Jharkhand need to take their first innings to a respectable size on day two.
Group D: Twenty wickets in a day
Rajasthan were bowled out for 78 and Himachal Pradesh replied with 153, so 20 wickets fell in the day and Rajasthan trail by 75. Twenty wickets in a day makes it clear the pitch is a gift to the bowlers. Rajasthan's consolation is that Himachal's lead is limited to 75; if their batsmen can post even around 200 in the second innings, the match levels out. The other Group D fixtures also belonged to the bowlers.
The second-best bowling figures of the round belonged to Abhishek Kumar, who took 5 for 14, yet he received no prose. Ankush Bains' 56 was similarly buried in the brief scores, while Karan Sharma took 3 for 39. The asymmetry is telling: recognition in coverage tracks names rather than the scale of performance — a five-wicket haul gets one line, a nine-for gets the lead.
Plate Group: three matches, six teams
Six teams played the three Plate Group fixtures. The scorecards also include Arunachal Pradesh's Salil Malhotra — meaning two Salils appear in the same round, a collision risk for anyone aggregating results quickly. For the Plate teams every match carries disproportionate weight compared with the Elite groups.
Context and what to watch on day two
Defending champions Jammu & Kashmir are part of this round, which sharpens the competition in their group. By round four the quarter-final picture is beginning to take shape in each group, but the first-day scores show that no team is safe anywhere. Three things stand out: there is no toss, weather or pitch information anywhere, yet figures like Rajasthan's 78 and Jharkhand's run rate cannot be read without it; there is no discussion of points-table consequences; and no follow-on or declaration strategy is on show. This is a report built on data, not analysis.
The biggest focus on day two will be Vidarbha, who must bridge a 153-run gap with 14 wickets already down. Karnataka will look to extend their lead, and Punjab's unbeaten pair will aim to take the total past 400. Rajasthan have no route but to erase 75 runs, while Jharkhand need to give their first innings a respectable shape.
Brief scores:
Vidarbha v Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh 209 (Atharva Mahajan 85, Harsh Dubey 9/53); Vidarbha 56/4 (trail by 153).
Karnataka v Assam: Assam 135 (Bhatkal 5/35, Shetty 5/53); Karnataka 180/2 (lead by 45).
Punjab v Group B opponent: Punjab 276/5 (Salil Arora 111 not out, Sanvir 100 not out; unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 205).
Bengal v Maharashtra: Bengal 143; Maharashtra 21/2 (12 wickets in the day).
Rajasthan v Himachal Pradesh: Rajasthan 78; Himachal Pradesh 153 (Rajasthan trail by 75; 20 wickets in the day).
Services: 266 (Rajat Paliwal 111 not out).
Jharkhand: 37/3 (25 overs).
