PUNE — Coastal Kings won the Metro T20 League (MTL) title on Sunday night, chasing down 187 with four balls to spare to beat Northern Strikers by five wickets at the Navin Cricket Stadium. Captain Arjun Mehra carried his bat for 78 off 46 deliveries, hitting five fours and four sixes, and shared an unbroken 71-run sixth-wicket stand off 40 balls with Vihaan Rao that turned a game Northern Strikers had controlled for 13 overs.

It is Coastal Kings' second MTL crown, after their Season 3 triumph; they also reached the Season 5 final and lost. Northern Strikers have now lost two consecutive finals, despite topping the league table this season with eight wins.

First innings: 186 and a mid-innings squeeze

Put in to bat, Strikers started solidly. Faizan Ansari made 34 inside the powerplay and Dev Malhotra (31 off 22) gave him company. The opening pair put on 58 without loss in six overs, forcing Mehra to bring spin on early. Harshit Joshi broke through in the seventh over, having Malhotra caught at cover. Ansari went on to 64 off 38 with six fours and three sixes before holing out to Mehra at midwicket off a Tejas Kulkarni slower ball in the 14th over.

Kulkarni then bowled Arya Thakur (27 off 18) in the 16th to staunch the scoring. Strikers managed only 41 in the last four overs, having looked set for 200-plus, and finished on 186/6, with Yash Chauhan unbeaten on 22 off 11. Kulkarni returned 3/31 and Joshi 2/24.

The chase: early wickets, mounting pressure

Kings lost Kabir Saxena in the third over, caught behind off Mayank Singhal for 22, and Ishan Bhatia lbw to Omkar Deshmukh for 14 in the next. At 47/2 after five overs the required rate was already 9.3. Samar Sheikh (8) and Nikhil Doshi (12) fell in quick succession, and between the ninth and eleventh overs Kings managed just 21 runs off 26 balls. At 119/5 after 14 overs, Strikers were firmly on top.

Mehra and Rao turn it around

Mehra began taking calculated risks, striking Deshmukh for six and four in the 15th over. Rao, initially content to rotate strike, hit two fours off Singhal in the 17th. By the end of the 18th over Kings were 171/5, needing 16 off 12. Singhal conceded only three off his first two balls of the 19th, but Mehra hit a four and a six off the fourth and fifth to bring the target down to two off the last over. Rao took a single off the first ball from Zubair Khan and drove the second through cover for four to finish it at 190/5 in 19.2 overs, unbeaten on 44 off 26.

In the numbers

Kings scored 71 in the last 40 balls after managing 119 off the first 80. Mehra's 78 included 24 runs from the 15th and 19th overs alone. Strikers' most economical bowler was Deshmukh (4-0-29-1), while Singhal took 2/34. Kings' bowlers conceded just 38 for three in the last five overs of the first innings — the decisive margin.

Mehra was named Player of the Match; Ansari took Player of the Tournament honours with 512 runs.

Reaction

"After 14 overs we knew there was only one route — don't lose a wicket and find ten an over," Mehra said. "The way Vihaan signalled his intent from the first ball made my job easier. This trophy belongs to the people who kept faith in this group after the Season 5 final."

Coaching staff member Manoj Tripathi said the middle order had been criticised all season and had answered it in the final. "We kept saying our batting wasn't top-order dependent. Tonight a number six made 44 off 26 in a final."

Thakur took responsibility for the defeat. "The bowling in the 18th and 19th overs wasn't final-standard. 186 wasn't a small score on this pitch, but we didn't take wickets through the middle and we should have scored more than 41 in the last four."

Tactics and conditions

The surface was good for batting for the first ten overs but dew reduced the spinners' grip after the interval, which Kings exploited by backing their aggressive middle order rather than holding batters back. Strikers used three different bowlers in the last four overs, allowing Mehra and Rao to settle.

What's next

Season 8 is scheduled for March, with retention lists due next month. Kings' main question is whether they keep their pace attack intact, with Kulkarni's contract expiring; Strikers must prove their league-stage dominance was more than a table-topping statistic. For now, the trophy travels to Pune — and the final was another reminder that controlling 14 overs in T20 cricket guarantees nothing.
